Support National Donut Day on June 4 (& all month)

Bakery Hill isn’t selling donuts this year, but encourages customers to support National Donut Day, the annual fundraising project sponsored by the Salvation Army and the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association.

National Donut Day 2021 is Friday, June 4— and the celebration will continue throughout the month of June, with focus on “Finding a Dozen Ways to Show Love.”

You can show support for a local retail bakery by picking up some donuts and then delivering them to first responders, teachers, or health care workers in your own neighborhood. (Take a photo of your donut delivery and share it on social media with the tag #TSADonutDay)
While you are at a participating bakery (see list below) you can support the Salvation Army by looking for a Red Kettle and donating to help those in the community who are facing food and housing insecurity.

- The Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association has set a goal of raising $10,000 to help Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky families.
- In 2020, The Salvation Army in Greater Cincinnati provided more than 575,000 meals– four times more than in 2019. Requests for assistance were up 150%.

Participating bakeries (along with Bakery Hill) include Artrageous Desserts, Bean Haus Bakery & Café, Bonnie Lynn Bakery, Bonomini Bakery, Busken Bakery, The Donut Spot, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Harrison Home Bakery, Holtman’s Donuts, Jupiter Coffee & Donuts, Little Dutch Bakery, Marcella’s Doughnuts & Bakery, North College Hill Bakery, Regina Bakery, Schmidt Bakery, Servatii Pastry Shop, Tres Belle Cakes, and Wyoming Pastry Shop.

National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a tribute to the “Donut Lassies,” a group of volunteers who prepared donuts for thousands of soldiers during World War I.

These “Lassies” provided care and comfort to soldiers who were far from home. Donuts represented a taste of home, sweetness and comfort. The Retail Bakers Assocation noted: “After a long difficult year, we can all use the sweetness and comfort that donuts still provide today.”
