Faculty member’s teaching tip is published to help other A&P instructors

A classroom activity created by Dr. Karen Groh, a member of the Cincinnati State Biology Department, was published in the online “Teaching Tips” of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

The goals of HAPS include enhancing the quality of classroom and laboratory instruction in human anatomy and physiology (A&P) at colleges and universities, and promoting communication and collaboration among A&P teachers.

Dr. Groh’s peer-reviewed article is titled “To Sunscreen or Not to Sunscreen: A Guided Inquiry Activity.” The class activity helps students understand the role of melanin (skin pigmentation), the synthesis of Vitamin D, and the advantages and disadvantages of dark and light skin.

After students explore the adaptive advantages and disadvantages of dark and light skin, they apply their knowledge by recommending interventions for brief scenarios that involve skin color and lifestyle or health conditions.

Dr. Groh said the activity is suitable for a traditional or a “flipped” classroom format, and student feedback has been positive.
