Food Pantry needed can openers; Environmental Club faculty & students “can do”

Many Cincinnati State students visit the Surge Cupboard Food Pantry each week to receive a free supply of canned goods– but canned goods are no good if you don’t have a can opener. 

So Environmental Engineering Technology Professor Ann Fallon and the Cincinnati State Environmental Club, as a member of the Greater Cincinnati Higher Education Sustainability Cohort, obtained a grant from Last Mile Food Rescue Cincinnati and used the grant funds to purchase a supply of can openers and reusable bags for the Food Pantry. 

Ann said, “The can openers increase accessibility to canned food that is donated to our Food Pantry patrons, and the tote bags help with sustainable transport of items from the Food Pantry and Farmer’s Markets.”

Currently-registered Cincinnati State students may visit the Surge Cupboard in Main 137 once a month to receive up to a 3-day supply of food and toiletries at no cost, by showing their Surge Card (student ID card).

The Surge Cupboard also sponsors monthly Farmer’s Markets where students can obtain fresh produce (provided by the Freestore Foodbank) at no cost.
