Common Time on Apr. 1 will examine using Chosen Names and Preferred Pronouns to create an inclusive environment
Cincinnati State’s JAIDE Council (Justice, Access, Inclusion, Diversity & Equity) invites students and employees to a discussion on “Creating an Inclusive College Environment: Using Chosen Names and Preferred Pronouns Matters!” on Monday, April 1, during Common Time (3 to 4:30 p.m.) in the Conference Center.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Dr. Ronnie Gladden and Professor CJ Jones will facilitate the session, which will help participants increase their understanding of questions such as:
- What are chosen names and preferred pronouns?
- Why is the use of chosen names and preferred pronouns important in daily interactions?
- How can the use of chosen names and preferred pronouns increase retention and improve experiences for students, staff and faculty members, and other College stakeholders?
Other portions of this Common Time session include:
- A literary perspective on use of chosen names and preferred pronouns as an expression of personal autonomy and an individual’s life story and culture.
- A description of the experiences of a transgender student at Cincinnati State.
- An update on work of a JAIDE subcommittee, led by Crissy Ross and Lauren Todd, that is addressing the College’s Chosen Names policy as part of a larger evaluation of College policies from a JAIDE lens.
