Welcome, new H&S Lead Advisor Aaron Akey
Aaron Akey has joined the Humanities and Sciences Division as the full-time Lead Advisor.
Aaron has over a decade of higher education experience. He served as the Associate Dean of Student Enrollment at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (Lexington, KY) where he led the Onboarding Advising Team, Career Center, and Transfer Center.
Previously at BCTC, he served as Transfer Center Director and as a Student Development Specialist on one of the college’s regional campuses, where he provided advising, recruitment, and other support services.
As an adjunct instructor, Aaron has taught history and First Year Experience courses. He also spent about three years in the securities industry as a registered investment advisor.
Aaron earned a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degrees in History from Appalachian State University. He is pursuing a doctorate of education from the University of Kentucky, with research focused on how to identify and support community college students who are at a higher risk of not completing a credential by examining student registration timing and trends.
Aaron says he believes in using a holistic approach to advising that “helps students develop personally, professionally, and academically.” He is motivated by working with students from underserved populations and seeing them overcome challenges and succeed.
Aaron lives in Northern Kentucky with his spouse and son. He greatly enjoys spending time with his family, and also enjoys watching sports, staying active in the community, and reading books about history.
