Julie McLaughlin appointed to national advisory board for First Year Experience Resource Center

Julie McLaughlin, Department Chair and Professor for the First Year Experience (FYE) courses at Cincinnati State, has been appointed to a four-year term on the National Advisory Board for the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina.

Julie was selected based on her work on behalf of undergraduate students at Cincinnati State and her influential contributions to higher education research and practice related to First Year Experience classes. She joins other distinguished scholar-practitioners who have been selected for the National Advisory Board based on their significant contributions to the field of student success in the United States and internationally. 

In 2020, Julie was named an Outstanding First-Year Advocate by the National Resource Center. She is co-author of the textbook Thriving in the Community College and Beyond: Research-Based Strategies for Academic Success and Personal Development, now in its 5th edition.

Julie said, “It’s an honor to serve on this National Advisory Board, and I’m especially pleased to be an additional representative of two-year colleges in this group. I look forward to serving along with excellent faculty and staff members from around the country who assist the National Resource Center in improving the experiences of students in higher education.”

Julie also is Chair and Professor of the Leadership Certificate program at the College, and she is a ten-time nominee for the House/Bruckmann Faculty Excellence Award.

The National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition, established in 1986, is a recognized leader and serves as a clearinghouse for scholarship, policy, and best practice for all post-secondary student transitions, and serves education professionals by supporting and advancing efforts to improve student learning and transitions into and through higher education.

The Center provides opportunities for the exchange of practical and scholarly information as well as the discussion of trends and issues in the field through conferences, workshops, online learning opportunities, and a variety of publications and online channels for resource sharing and communication.
