Update: No natural gas in Main on Monday as repairs continue for newly-found leak
A new problem was discovered on Friday, August 11, after natural gas and hot water lines to the Main Building were restored to service.
A new leak was discovered inside the tunnel (on the interior of Main) at the weld where the new pipe connects to the existing old piping.
- The leak is minor, and was temporarily repaired (taped) by the contractor.
- The weld needs to be redone, so repairs are scheduled to resume on Monday, August 14, early in the day. The natural gas supply will be shut off again until repairs are finished. The work is expected to be completed before end-of-day on Monday.
- Contractors installed new natural gas piping during the week of August 7 and the new piping was pressure tested, with Duke Energy personnel witnessing the test. Pressure stayed steady during the test, indicating that no other leaks were present in the pipes buried in the ground and connected to the Main Building.
Other repairs will continue during the week of August 14 to the electrical conduit that was damaged during this project. After those repairs are completed, the excavation area outside Main Building Exit Door 22 can be filled.
Exit Door 22 (near the Surge Cupboard Food Pantry) remains closed to pedestrian traffic and some portions of Parking Lot D continue to have reduced availability until all repair work is completed.
