CState hosted Stock Market Challenge for Junior Achievement HS students
On April 6, nearly 150 high school students visited Cincinnati State to take part in the Junior Achievement (JA) Stock Market Challenge, hosted by the Business Technologies Division.
Students from Dater HS, Oyler School, Princeton HS, and West HS participated in person along with an additional 200 students who participated remotely.
The day started with a campus tour led by Admissions staff, and students enjoyed lunch in the Overlook prior to the competition.
- Junior Achievement’s mission is to “inspire and prepare young people to succeed” through activities that reinforce the importance of education and “promote financial capability, work and career readiness, and business ownership.”
- For the Stock Market Challenge, students worked in teams and used $1 million in play money to invest in quasi-fictitious stocks and compete to build the highest net worth over the course of 60 simulated “trading days” (with each “day” lasting only 60 seconds).
- The event was paired with classroom lessons to build deeper understanding of the stock market and investing.
Business Division Dean Yvonne Baker thanked faculty members Meg Clark and Dr. Stani Kantcheva for “embracing the event,” including welcoming the students with PayDay and 100 Grand candy bars, along with information about CState’s Accounting and Finance programs.
“The originally-planned venue for the Challenge backed out a few weeks before the event, and one of the local JA leaders, Jeff Brokamp of Junior Achievement OKI Partners, told us Cincinnati State ‘saved the day’,” Dean Baker said.
Dean Baker also thanked Norbert Thomas for his expertise and the Facilities crew for accomodating a last-minute request for a customized room setup.
“Mr. Brokamp greatly appreciated the excellent customer service everyone provided during the JA day at the College,” Dean Baker said.
