Surge Surveyors took 2nd place in ASCE national student competition
Cincinnati State’s “Surge Surveyors” earned second place in the first-ever Society-wide Student Surveying Competition sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Utility Engineering & Surveying Institute (UESI).
The competition was held June 25-27, in virtual format.
The CState team finished only a few points behind the first-place team from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez.
Two university teams tied for third place: Bradley University and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
The Cincinnati State team members (seen in the top row of the photo above, during their virtual presentation) included Land Surveying bachelor’s degree June graduates Cara Morman (team captain), Macalister Keeley, Micah McCain, and Shelley Richardson.
- The surveying competition required three members of each team to complete four separate tasks that demonstrated ability to apply techniques of land surveying.
- Team members used standard field and office equipment and procedures to solve common problems encountered in industry.
Two of the three competition judges are seen at the bottom of the photo: Dr. Dimitrios Bolkas (Penn State, Dept. of Surveying Engineering) and head judge Marco Sanchez (Civil Engineer, Port of Los Angeles).
Carol Morman, Program Chair for the Land Surveying associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, said, “Only 10 teams made it to the Society-wide competition, and all of the others were from universities. Our team put in a lot of work and we’re very proud of their accomplishment!”
