Student Loaner Laptop program continues in Fall; financial aid can be used to purchase computers
Cincinnati State announced in June 2021 that during academic year 2021-22, registered students will continue to have the option to borrow a laptop computer and/or a Wi-Fi hotspot from the College at no cost.
Around the same time, the College placed an order (using Federal Stimulus Funds) for 400 new laptops to be added to the loaner program.
Like many shoppers who are experiencing pandemic-related delays, the College is still waiting for the additional laptops to arrive. They are now scheduled to be delivered at the end of September.
In the meantime, loaner laptops continue to be provided to students, including some laptops taken from the current inventory of computers reserved for employees.
- Since June, 326 students requests have been completed for a laptop, hotspot, or both.
- About 50 requests are pending pickup.
- About 60 new requests (for a laptop, hot spot, or both) are in process.
- About 50 requests are incomplete, meaning the student didn't complete the eForm or didn't respond to a request for updates to their form.
Chief Information Officer Frankie Baker said some students who requested laptops primarily so they can use Microsoft Office tools are receiving some of the best of the College's supply of older laptops to use until newer computers arrive.
Students who are registered for Fall Semester classes can still use the eForm COVID-19 Student Technology Loaner Program - 2021 to request a loaner laptop or hotspot.
- Students must be logged into MyCState to access the form, and must be registered for Fall classes (15-week or 10-week) before submitting the form.
- Students who used loaned equipment in Summer and are registered for Fall classes can submit the eForm to "renew" their use of borrowed equipment.
Bookstore computer purchase program will offer lower-priced options
Begininng in Summer 2020, Cincinnati State made it possible for students who are using financial aid to apply some of their financial aid funds to cover all or part of the cost of purchasing a laptop computer.
The College's Student Technology Task Force and the academic Program Chairs developed a list of recommended computers that can be purchased at the Follett Cincinnati State Bookstore.

The Student Technology Task Force headed by Vice President Amy Waldbillig, along with representatives of academics, information technology services, and financial aid, has taken steps to add some lower-priced options to the list of recommended Dell computers.
- After Program Chairs have an opportunity to review a revised list, updated information will be posted on the College website and the College Bookstore's website will be updated also.
Financial Aid Considerations:
- Students using financial aid to help pay for their Cincinnati State education may be able to use some funds to cover all or part of the cost of a laptop computer and required software (if applicable).
- Students using financial aid to purchase a computer immediately must buy a “CState Recommended” computer from the College Bookstore.
- Purchases can be made online, with arrangements for delivery to the student's address or pick-up at the Bookstore.
- Computers purchased using financial aid cannot be returned to the Bookstore for a refund unless the package is unopened.
- Students who wait to use their refund of "excess" financial aid can purchase a computer from any store/vendor.
- Students should talk to a Financial Aid advisor for more information.
George Floyd Social Justice Scholarship awarded to 3 students
In June 2020, the Cincinnati State Foundation established the George Floyd Social Justice Scholarship
The new scholarship provides funding for Cincinnati State students who have demonstrated promising academic performance and a keen awareness of social justice issues.
More than 70 students submitted applications for the scholarship, which included an essay discussing social justice leadership, experiences with racial injustice, or how to contribute to social justice change. Applicants also had to provide letters of reference and their cumulative grade point average.
Essays were reviewed by a committee including community leaders Mr. Rollins Davis and Mr. Nathan Ivey, along with Cincinnati State Transfer Center Coordinator Dr. Myshamil Walker.
The scholarship recipients for 2021 are:
- Souleymane Coulibaly - Computer Network Engineering Technology (GPA 3.6)
- Nikki McDulin - Nursing (GPA 3.7)
- Helen Tayar - Nursing (GPA 4.0)
Each recipient received an equal share of $1600 in funds raised for the inaugural scholarship awards, with another $500 set aside for future scholarships.
Academic Coach and adjunct instructor Dr. Jennifer Davis-Bowman took a leadership role in reaching out to others to support the new scholarship. Contributors to the scholarship fund included College faculty, staff, and administrators as well as community supporters who are K-12 teachers, small business owners, and those whose families lost loved ones due to police violence.

Info sessions help students prepare for co-op & full-time job interviews with P&G
Students who are interested in applying for Procter & Gamble's Successway Co-op program or for full-time positions in Research & Development at P&G can learn more at information sessions on Sep. 22 (in-person) and Sep. 30 (virtual).
The information sessions, led by Business Division Co-op Coordinator Adam Waits, help prepare potential candidates for P&G’s unique application process, including the online application, assessments, and behavioral-based interviewing.
Session dates/times are:

The P&G Successway Co-op program offers two semesters of full-time co-op work for students who are earning degrees in Associate of Arts, Business Technology fields, or Information Technology fields.
Other program qualifications include:
- GPA of 2.5 or higher, with at least 12 credit hours completed
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (especially MS Excel)
P&G full-time positions in Research and Development are open to graduates or close-to-graduation students in Engineering Technology fields, or Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science programs with concentrations in Biology or Chemistry.
- Work assignments will focus on applied research and new product development.
- Students who still need to complete co-op requirements will be able to apply the P&G work experience toward their degree.

Culinary Co-op Coordinator and students assisted at Western Southern Open
From Aug. 14 to 22, 2021, the Western Southern Open tennis tournament returned to Mason, Ohio, bringing professional tennis players from around the world to Greater Cincinnati.
Several Cincinnati State employees have been long-time volunteers at this important international sports event, including Business Division Co-op Coordinator Scott Holubetz.
Scott has been part of the tournament for six years, working alongside several CState culinary students.
This year, four students participated with Scott as employees of Levy Restaurants, working in the kitchen of the Player Dining area.
The CState team included (photo above, from left) Simon Moksin, Scott Holubetz, Janet Pipes, Mary Bell, and Peter Jula.
Scott said, "I enjoy this time because it helps me keep my culinary skills sharp, observe the latest trends in banquet presentations and large scale cost controls, and build closer relationships with students."
"Students see first-hand how large events are produced, and they get to take care of world’s best tennis stars," Scott added.
A student shared with Scott in a thank-you note: “These past two weeks have been an absolute wonderful and exciting learning experience for me. I was able to participate in the culinary world I love so much, and I also saw the effort and time you gave each day. Thank you for being an amazing chef and mentor.”
Scott said, "For me, that’s an amazing summer vacation!"
