Plan for Fall courses is 65% remote offerings, but many technical courses include in-person elements

For Fall Semester 2020, about 65% of Cincinnati State's planned course sections will be offered in a remote format, while about 22% of planned course sections will use in-person instruction for some or all course activities.

Almost all general education courses planned for Fall will be offered using remote formats, but a significant number of technical courses will include in-person components so students can complete required "hands-on" activities.

Another 13% of planned sections for Fall are co-op or clinical courses. The format for experiential education is determined by the co-op employer or the clinical site.

  • Faculty program and department chairs and academic administrators developed the plans for Fall course formats over the past several weeks.
  • Students already registered for a Fall course are notified if the course section changed its delivery format.
  • Safety protocols for Fall semester in-person activities are currently under review, with details to be published soon.

Health and Public Safety Division Dean Janelle McCord said most HPS programs plan to offer Fall courses through a combination of in-person and hybrid formats.

Hybrid format means some activities are conducted in-person at scheduled days/times and other course activities are completed online.

"For accredited technical courses, some required hands-on skills can't be learned as well on a computer screen, and some required evaluations need to happen face-to-face," Dean McCord said.

"As we prepare students to take their place in healthcare and public safety fields, our students must practice universal safety precautions. We have added to the PPE many of our students already must wear to do their work," Dean McCord said.

Yvonne Baker, Interim Dean of the Business Division, said about 40% of scheduled Fall course sections for Business programs will include some in-person activities.

A similar prorportion of in-person activity is anticipated for Engineering & Information Technologies Division courses.

As of June 25, the College-wide mix of scheduled Fall courses is:

  • 880 course sections are scheduled for a form of remote delivery:
    • WEB - fully online and asynchronous, meaning that students are not required to use web conferencing software to complete online coursework
    • LIVW - Live Web - fully online, with mandatory "class meetings" conducted using video conferencing software such as Zoom
    • WHYB - Web Hybrid - fully online, with some mandatory class meetings via video conferencing, and some asynchronous activities
  • 293 course sections are scheduled for fully in-person delivery or for Hybrid delivery, with some activities conducted in-person at scheduled days/times and other activities online
  • 178 scheduled course sections are for co-op or clinical education

Fall students will continue to be able to borrow laptop computers and Wi-Fi hotspots from the College, if needed.

Planning is also underway that will allow financial-aid-eligible students to purchase a laptop computer and software using their financial aid funds.

Financial aid allocations will be increased to cover the cost of the technology purchases.

Details of the laptop purchasing process are expected to be available to students in July.
