Loaner laptops still available for Summer students; new efforts underway for Fall technology needs
Cincinnati State students who wlll begin Summer Semester classes on June 1 still can borrow a laptop computer and/or personal Wi-Fi "hotspot" to use for their remote classes.
- Students must be registered for Summer classes to qualify for the loaner laptop and/or hotspot, and must complete an eForm to request the loaned equipment.
- Loaned equipment is distributed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at least though the first week of June.
- More than 100 Summer students have already picked up their loaned equipment.

Laptops for all in Fall?
Planning is currently underway to make a designated laptop computer part of the "cost of attendance" information used to determine how much financial aid a student is eligible to receive.
- All Program Chairs have been asked to review recommended specifications for computers that students would be able to purchase using financial aid funds.
- The goal is to complete within the next few weeks all steps required to build the cost of a computer into financial aid allocations for Fall Semester 2020.
- Each student would purchase their own computer (with assistance from the College Bookstore), to be used throughout their time as a Cincinnati State student.
Efforts to make the cost of a computer part of the financial aid allocation are being led by the Student Technology Task Force headed by VP Amy Waldbillig and Chief of Advancement Elliott Ruther.
Task Force members represent Academics, Information Technology Services, Advancement, and Financial Aid.
Assistance is being provided by Provost Robbin Hoopes and the academic Deans.
No-show rules clarified for remote classes
The U.S. Department of Education recently issued guidance for "no show" reporting during remote operations.
- For instructors teaching 15-week Summer courses, no-show rosters are due on May 28.
- Faculty members with questions about College no-show policies should contact their Dean or Associate Dean.
No-show reporting demonstrates, for financial aid purposes, that students begin attending each class on their schedule.
If the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) requests evidence of attendance from the College, the College's no-show reports provide that proof.
Two key pieces of information from instructors can satisfy DOE’s requirement for evidence:
- An instructor’s attendance records
- A student's completion (or attempt at completion) of an academic assignment
The DOE standards for attendance in relation to CState remote delivery formats are described below.
WEB classes (completely online asynchronous course):
- For a student to be considered a “show” (attended classes) they must, at minimum, attempt to complete an assignment during the first two weeks of the semester.
- Assignments that qualify could be as simple as a survey or email affirming that the student has read the syllabus, an “introduction” post in a discussion forum, or even an email message to the instructor asking for assistance in completing an assignment.
- For this reason, it's important that all WEB courses have an assignment of some kind due during the first two weeks of the semester.
LIVW classes (Live Web: A course with regular, required live online sessions): A student “attending” a live online class session qualifies as a “show.”
- The instructor’s attendance record satisfies the DOE requirement for proof of attendance, so it's important that instructors keep attendance records of LIVW sessions during at least the first two weeks of the semester.
- Additionally, in a LIVW course, if a student fails to attend live sessions, but completes (or attempts) an assignment during the first two weeks of the semester, that also qualifies as a “show.”
- A no-show in a LIVW course is appropriate only if a student does not attend any live sessions and does not complete any assignments during the first two weeks.
WHYB classes (Web Hybrid: A mostly asynchronous online course with some required live online sessions): Like LIVW classes, either attendance during a live session or an attempt at an assignment during the first two weeks qualify the student as a “show.”
- If no live class sessions are scheduled in the first two weeks of the semester, it's crucial that students are required to complete an assignment during the first two weeks of the semester.
- Like LIVW courses, it's important that instructors of WHYB classes keep an attendance record for live sessions during the first two weeks of the semester.
Simply logging into the Blackboard course, alone, does not qualify as a “show” in any instance.
College Credit Plus hosts Virtual Orientation on May 28
Cincinnati State's College Credit Plus (CCP) program will offer a virtual orientation session for high school students on Thursday, May 28, starting at 1 p.m.
Additional CCP virtual orientation sessions are scheduled for July and August.
New College Credit Plus students can register for orientation at https://www.cincinnatistate.edu/ccp-orientation-advising.
Spotlight on Service: Co-op student helped Gorman Farm before and during pandemic
Gabrielle Price (above right), an Associate of Science student studying environmental education, completed a Spring Semester internship at Gorman Heritage Farm, a 122-acre nonprofit, working farm in Evendale with a mission to educate about agriculture, nutrition, sustainability, and the environment.
Prior to the pandemic, Gabby helped provide education on sustainable gardening and bee keeping, and provided support for other community education efforts of the Farm.
When the Farm closed to the public, Gabby continued assisting with tasks in the gardens and other Farm operations.
Gabby said, "I gained further knowledge to apply to my field and solidified my future plans due to this experience. The environment was conducive to learning beyond what I knew already and enabled me to grow even more."
Co-op Coordinator Jayne Dressing said Gabby's internship supervisor, Farm Volunteer Manager Beth Walker, commented, "It was a privilege to have Gabby on our team-- she is hard working, smart, kind, and helpful."

College (virtually) closed for Memorial Day on May 25
All Cincinnati State virtual and in-person campus operations are closed on Monday, May 25, in recognition of Memorial Day.
Classes and services resume Tuesday, May 26.
