Cincinnati State hosted "America's Test Kitchen" celebrity chefs

Cincinnati State's Midwest Culinary Institute welcomed over 400 guests on Nov. 21 to attend two cooking demonstrations led by Chef Julia Collin Davison (on left in photo) and Chef Bridget Lancaster, co-hosts of the popular PBS cooking show "America's Test Kitchen."

The nationally-renowned chefs and cookbook authors were assisted by MCI chefs and students during lunchtime and evening presentations in the Culinary Demonstration Kitchen on Clifton Campus.

The visit from the "America's Test Kitchen" chefs was a fundraiser for local PBS station WCET.

The presentations were recorded as part of the 20th anniversary of "American's Test Kitchen," which is described as "the most successful cooking show on TV."

MCI Executive Chef Jason Lafferty, who is also an Associate Dean for the Business Division, said Cincinnati State was selected to host the local events because of the College's "top-notch facilities."

"Chefs Bridget and Julia praised our students, staff, and facilities during and after their presentations, which was an honor for us," Chef Lafferty said.

Hope Reed, a publicist for the TV show co-hosts, said: “We have been to facilities and television sets across the country, and this was the most professional event we have been a part of because of Cincinnati State’s facility, staff, and students, providing support to CET.”

President Monica Posey welcomed campus guests to the Nov. 21 events and gave a brief introduction to the College.

Chef Lafferty thanked College faculty and staff members who contributed to event success:

  • Faculty members Candice Jones and Paula Kirch Smith assisted with event logistics and volunteer coordination, as well as helping with food preparation.
     
  • Chefs Billy Mincey, Michael VanFleet, and Betsy LaSorella created and supported the lunch and dinner offerings.
     
  • Recently-retired faculty member Chef Jeff Sheldon returned to supervise volunteers and support meal preparation.
     
  • Cincinnati State Events Manager Sarah Gorman and her staff provided great set-up and customer service.
     
  • Greenhouse Manager Kelly Wanstrath and the Cincinnati State Greenhouse staff assembled over 100 beautiful gourdulents as part of event decor. Chef Lafferty noted that guests "happily purchased the gourdulents since Chefs Julia and Bridget mentioned them during their segments."
     
  • Faculty member Chef Grace Yek kept the public informed about the day's events by sharing social media photos and comments.

Retirement celebration for Sandy Owen on Dec. 3

Members of the College community are invited to a Retirement Open House in honor of Professor Sandy Owen, program chair for Early Childhood Education.

The Open House takes place Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the Summit Restaurant (ATLC 2nd floor) on Clifton Campus.

All are welcome to drop in as your schedule allows, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and beverages (cash bar), and celebrate Sandy's contributions to the College and the Early Childhood Education profession.

Sandy is retiring at the end of Fall semester, after 17 years at the College.

Prior to joining the faculty, Sandy served as manager of the William L. Mallory Early Learning Center on Clifton Campus.

As Program Chair for ECE, Sandy led successful efforts to achieve program accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and she has contributed to numerous efforts in the region to improve and expand opportunities for future educators of young children.

Visit the Open House and extend your best wishes to Sandy as she says farewell to CState.

Writing Center to provide Scholarship Application Workshops on Dec. 2-5

During the week after Thanksgiving break (Dec. 2-5), the Writing Center on Clifton Campus will offer several workshops to assist students who are working on scholarship applications.

Each workshop session will address the essentials of preparing a scholarship application and drafting a cover letter.

Appointments are not needed, but each workshop session is limited to 20 participants.

All workshops take place in Main Building Room 237.

Scholarship workshops are available:

  • Monday, Dec. 2 - 9 to 10 a.m. & 11 a.m. to noon & 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 3 - 10:30  to 11:30 a.m. & 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 4 - 10 to 11 a.m. & 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, Dec. 5 - 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. & 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. & 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Students are encouraged to submit an Institutional Scholarship application and complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for 2020-21 by Dec. 8 to qualify for a celebration in the Financial Aid Office during the week of Dec. 9. PSY & ESL students offer collaborative project presentations on Dec. 2 & 3

On Dec. 2 and 3, students enrolled in two sections of Introduction to Psychology (PSY 110, taught by Heather Hatchett), together with students from three sections of English as a Second Language Level 2 (ESL 052, taught by Maggie Oliveira), will present posters that summarize the results of collaborative research projects conducted during Fall Semester.

Members of the College community are invited to visit the poster displays and learn about the research topics and how students managed group dynamics during the 13-week project.

A total of 18 student teams will present their work at poster sessions to be held on two days:

  • Monday, Dec. 2 - noon to 1 p.m. in ATLC 313
     
  • Tuesday, Dec. 3 - 9 to 10 a.m. in Main 113, and noon to 1 p.m. in ATLC 313

To carry out the collaborative research project, titled "We Are Cincinnati State," students formed teams that included group members from the Psychology and ESL classes. Teams then selected a social justice topic as the focus for group research.

  • Each element of the project was aligned with course learning outcomes for ESL 052 and PSY 110.
     
  • Project-related assignments for ESL classes helped build students' written and spoken communication skills.
     
  • Psychology class assignments required students to apply social psychological concepts such as managing interpersonal processes and countering attribution biases and prejudice.

This semester is the second time Maggie and Heather have used the collaborative course project as a new teaching method for students in the two courses. Their pilot project took place during Spring Semester 2019.

Heather said the Fall project design included adjustments made after consulting with experts at Temple University, examining feedback from faculty colleagues, and reviewing student survey data from the Spring semester classes.

The assessment of the pilot project led to changes in learning outcomes, assignments, and team activities.

Leadership Club collects gifts for foster children

The Cincinnati State Leadership Club is collecting toys and gifts for Necco, an organization that assists foster children and foster parents.

The Leadership Club invites members of the College community to contribute to the club project.

Suggested gifts for the children, ages infant through teenager, can include puzzles, books, art supplies, board games, activity kits, craft kits, multiethnic baby dolls, and gift cards.

If you would like to contribute, please bring unwrapped gifts to Leadership Club Advisor Julie McLaughlin, in the Humanities & Sciences office (Main 232) by Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Students enjoyed the annual Pre-Thanksgiving campus meal

Students seeking lunch at the Overlook Cafe on Nov. 20 enjoyed the College's annual free Thanksgiving meal for students.

The lunch service was provided with the assistance of numerous College employees including President Posey and others seen above and below, as well as many other helpers not captured on camera.

Those attending enjoyed a traditional meal with an abundance of pie, contributing to a festive pre-holiday mood on Clifton Campus.

ASCE Students helped with winter clean-up project

On Nov. 16, seven members of Cincinnati State's ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student Chapter, along with friends, family members, and work colleagues, joined a winter clean-up day in Cincinnati's Bond Hill neighborhood.

The work project was coordinated by the non-profit organization People Working Cooperatively (PWC).

PWC provides help for low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners in the area who may need assistance with critical home repairs, energy conservation and weatherization, and home maintenance services.

The ASCE group helped with raking leaves and other tasks to get yards ready for winter.

CState cheered for "Girls on the Run"

Cincinnati State students, faculty members, and friends (seen in photos above and below) greeted more than 1000 girls ages 8 to 13, and their running buddies, at the "Girls on the Run" 5K Walk/Run on Nov.16.

College representatives in the Cheer Zone near the halfway point of the run included Meredith Effler, Jessi Loomis and family, Holly McArthur, Barb Ratliff, students from the CState Leadership Club, and College mascot "The Surge."

Girls on the Run is an international program designed to get girls running, and in the process build character, self-confidence, and empowerment to reach their full potential.
