HLC Site Visit for Bachelor's Degrees is Sep. 9-10

On Sep. 9 and 10, a Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Review Team is visiting Cincinnati State's Clifton Campus in response to the College's Substantive Change Application submitted to HLC.

The College is seeking HLC approval to offer a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Culinary and Food Science and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Land Surveying.

Both bachelor's degree proposals were approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education in 2018.

The full schedule for the Site Visit is below. Faculty and staff members expected to participate in the sessions were informed previously.

The draft report on the results of the Site Visit is expected to be completed by Oct. 8, and the final report should be completed by Nov. 5.

CState launches Goldman Sachs "10,000 Small Businesses" program

Cincinnati State President Monica Posey, Cincinnati Mayor John Craney, and other regional leaders will speak on Monday, Sep. 9, at a press conference to announce the launch of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program at Cincinnati State.

The press conference starts at 10:30 a.m. in the ATLC First Floor Lounge, and is open to all employees.

The Goldman Sachs Foundation awarded a grant to Cincinnati State to deliver the program, which includes participation by Cincinnati State Business Division faculty members.

The 10,000 Small Businesses program is offered to entrepreneurs at no cost with support from the Goldman Sachs Foundation, to provide small business owners greater access to education, capital, and business support services that will drive job creation and economic opportunity.

The curriculum for 10,000 Small Businesses was developed by Babson College, a private business school in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Babson was named No. 1 for Entrepreneurship by U.S. News & World Report.

The curriculum includes an orientation day, followed by 9 one-day learning modules that are typically held on consecutive weeks. Topics include growth and opportunities, finance, marketing, personnel, operations, and more.

The program also includes four evening workshops on topics including legal issues and negotiation.

Cincinnati State and Columbus State faculty will be sharing 10,000 Small Businesses teaching duties on both campuses.

  • Business Management faculty member Judy Marshall is the lead faculty member for the Cincinnati State program. She will present the orientation and teach three learning modules.
  • Other faculty members who will teach program modules are Business Management Chair David Hensley and Management/Marketing Professor Lesli Rice.
  • Interim Dean of the Business Division (and Accounting Professor) Yvonne Baker will present a workshop on financial statements.

"Helping employers grow is a key part of Cincinnati State's mission," Dr. Posey said. "We are pleased to be partnering with the Goldman Sachs Foundation to make this opportunity available for local business owners."

The 10,000 Small Businesses program will begin in February. The goal for the first class is to include a 50-50 ratio of men and women business owners, and to work with government, business, and community groups to ensure that minority-owned businesses are included.

To qualify for the 10,000 Small Businesses program, a participant must be the owner or co-owner of a business that has been in operation for at least two years, has annual revenues above $150,000, and has at least four employees.

In June, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses announced the expansion of its program in Ohio to include regional hubs in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton. The program has been operating in Cleveland for several years.

Nationally, nearly 9,000 small business owners from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have graduated from 10,000 Small Businesses. The program's results include:

  • 67 percent of graduates see revenue growth six months after completing the program
  • 47 percent report creating new jobs six months after completing the program

TRiO program seeks students for 2019-20

Graduating students & TRiO SSS staff celebrated success in Spring 2018

The TRiO Student Support Services (TRiO SSS) program is recruiting registered Cincinnati State students to participate during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Faculty and staff members are invited to learn more at the TRiO SSS Meet and Greet, on Wednesday, Sep. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the TRiO SSS office in Main 131-B on Clifton Campus.

The TRiO SSS program provides support to help students successfully navigate college and complete graduation requirements. Services include:

  • Academic coaching
  • Personal and group tutoring
  • TRiO Grant Aid (for those who qualify)
  • Study Center with computers
  • Academic resources
  • Workshops that focus on strengthening computer skills, career knowledge, and financial literacy
  • Resource referrals

Students must complete an application to enroll in TRiO. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet at least one of these criteria:

  • Be a first-generation college student (neither parents nor guardian earned a bachelor’s degree)
  • Meet federal income guidelines as outlined by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Have a documented disability

Faculty and staff may schedule a brief classroom visit from TRiO staff to provide program information for students.

Counseling Office helps students deal with stress

The Counseling Office is offering weekly meetings throughout Fall Semester for any student who wants help dealing with anxiety and stress.

Meetings led by a counseling professional will take place on Mondays from 2 to 3 p.m. in ATLC 101, starting on Sep. 9 and continuing until Dec. 2.

Counselor Neisha Wiley said the group meetings will provide "a non-judgemental, inclusive, and encouraging space for learning strategies and skills for managing stress and anxiety."

Faculty opportunities for study in India, Jordan & Senegal

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) is offering three fully-funded professional development seminars that are open to community college faculty.

Each of the two-week overseas study trips allows faculty members to experience foreign cultures and engage with local scholars who are grappling with complex global issues like climate change and religious and ethnic diversity.

CAORC seminars include lectures from leading specialists, collaborative networking with local scholars, cultural and educational excursions, and experiential learning opportunities.

The seminar locations and topics are:

  • India: Exploring Urban Sustainability through India's Cities - Dec. 26, 2019 – Jan. 10, 2020 - Application deadline: Sep. 16, 2019
  • Senegal: Diversity, Religion, and Migration in West Africa - Jan. 6–23, 2020 - Application deadline: Sep. 30, 2019
  • Jordan: Sustainability at the Margins - Jan. 2–17, 2020 - Application deadline: Oct. 4, 2019

Faculty members selected for the seminars have all costs covered, including travel and accommodations.

Faculty participants in the seminars are required to develop new or improved course materials that can be openly shared on CAORC’s website and social media to enhance U.S. teaching.

In addition, participants should improve knowledge and awareness of the country that is the focus of their studies on their campuses and in their local communities, such as through workshops, open houses, or information sessions.

Finally, participants may be asked to attend a funded follow-on workshop in the U.S. to reflect on program achievements, lessons learned, and future collaborations.

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers is a private nonprofit federation of independent overseas research centers that promote advanced research, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, with focus on conservation and recording of cultural heritage and the understanding and interpretation of modern societies.

Funding for CAORC activities is awarded from sources including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as from private foundations and individuals.

I-75 & I-74 Construction Update (Sep. 9-13)

The Ohio Department of Transportation has scheduled overnight projects near the Clifton Campus related to major reconstruction of I-75 & I-74.

Monday, Sep. 9 through Thursday, Sep. 12 -

  • Single-lane closure of the on-ramp from I-75 northbound to I-74 westbound, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day.
  • Intermittent, short-term (15-minute) closures of I-74 and I-75 between 12 a.m. (midnight) and 4 a.m.

Wednesday, Sep. 11 -

  • Close the ramp from I-75 southbound to I-74 westbound from 11 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 through 5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. The detour uses I-75 southbound to Hopple Street to I-74 westbound.

Friday, Sep. 13 -

  • Single-lane closure on I-75 northbound from Monmouth Street to Mitchell Avenue from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Single-lane closure on I-75 southbound from Mitchell Avenue to Monmouth Street from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Single-lane closure of the on-ramp from I-75 NB to I-74 WB from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Intermittent, short-term (15-minute) closures of I-74 and I-75 between 12 a.m. (midnight) and 4 a.m.

Arrow boards and/or signs will alert motorists of the work zone and restrictions. All work is contingent upon the weather.

To help ensure the safety of the construction workers as well as the traveling public, motorists should remain alert, reduce their speed, and watch for stopped traffic while passing through the work zone. Remember, move over or slow down.
