CState Summer Marketing includes varied media & messages

The Marketing Department at Cincinnati State has been busy this summer implementing a variety of advertising initiatives to help boost enrollment for Fall.

Director of Marketing Jackie Norton said the College Executive Team allocated an additional $80,000 to the advertising budget starting in June, which helped support and expand some of the recent marketing efforts described below.

PRINT: Prior to the Memorial Day 3-day weekend, the Sunday edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer included a unique advertising flyer about Cincinnati State. The 8 1/2 by 11 inch flyer featured a curved upper edge, with the CState logo and a Cincinnati skyline on one side, and facts about the College on the other side. The insert was delivered to over 86,000 newspaper subscribers' homes.

Jackie said circulation data shows that newspaper sales increase on 3-day weekends, when readers may be examining the ads to look for sales at their favorite stores. The Cincinnati State flyer was desiged with a unique color, shape, and texture to stand out from other ads bundled with the Sunday Enquirer.

The flyer is referred to as a "die-cut” because cutting away part of the page results in the unique shape of the final flyer.

Jackie said offices of high school counselors often are decorated with colorful die-cut flyers from other colleges and universities, and now Cincinnati State will be part of those displays.

  • Additional copies of the die-cut flyer, and a brochure holder, are being distributed to each academic division office and to all campuses. Faculty and staff members are encouraged to help distribute the flyers when you visit schools, community organizations, and other locations that assist with the College's community outeach.
     
  • The information on the flyer is not time-sensitive, and the Marketing Department hopes to continue distributing copies throughout Fall semester. Contact Jackie at 569-4124 if you would like to help with outreach.

The College also has a half-page ad in the Cincinnati Magazine College Guide, inside the August issue. Copies will be mailed to magazine subscribers and will be available at newsstands in late July.

BILLBOARDS: Cincinnati State billboard messages include some locations on I-71 and I-75, as well as billboards dispersed throughout Cincinnati eastside and westside neighborhoods.

Some July billboard messages focus on the ability to earn a 4-year degree on the Clifton campus (see a sample at the bottom of this article).

TRANSIT: Cincinnati State typically spends about $2,500 per month for advertising on METRO buses and at bus stops/shelters. A additional $5,000 was invested in June, which supported expanded use of 15-second audio messages at selected METRO bus stops, as well as one 15-second commercial per hour for ten hours each day on every METRO bus.

Jackie said the bus advertising promotes specific academic programs, with 15 different commercials currently in rotation on buses. The audio messages are paired with a scrolling LED (on-screen) message that shows the College website URL, the Fall semester start date, and other information.

Jackie said the College's audio messages also are used at Government Square in downtown Cincinnati, where numerous bus riders enter or exit their bus.

DIGITAL ADVERTISING: Jackie said the majority of Cincinnati State's advertising budget is used for digital ads, because of their direct and quantifiable results. The additional budget allocation in June enabled increased use of Key Word Search advertising on Google and Bing.

Social media display advertising also was increased June, by adding Snapchat, a popular messaging app that lets users exchange pictures and videos.

  • Jackie said Snapchat use will continue in fiscal year 2020, paid for by moving to in-house management of Cincinnati State's Pinterest account (another popular way to share photos and videos online).

Special digital advertising efforts included outreach to students who were affected by the phase-out of some engineering-related programs at the University of Cincinnati's Clermont campus, encouraging these students transfer to CState.

Also, the College increased use of email targeted to groups of prospective students.

TV: Cincinnati State TV commercials appear on WXIX (Fox 19) and their HD channels, and on WKRC (Local 12), which also includes Star 64 and their HD channels.

  • Cincinnati State will be the sponsor for two "At the Movies" programs on Star 64 during July. Ad segments for one movie will target traditional students; the other set of ads will reach out to adult learners.
     
  • Fox 19 will include special focus on Cincinnati State on “The Cincy Weekend” to promote "Admit Me" Day on Aug. 3. Jackie said the College hopes to be able to use the video from Fox 19 during on-campus College Information Sessions conducted by the Admission Office.
     
  • Jackie said the College also has expanded use of ads on cable TV stations, as well as ads that appear with streaming media airing of TV programming (referred to as "over-the-top" ads).

RADIO: The College is promoting Admit Me Day events on eight of the top ten radio stations preferred by adults 18-34 in the Cincinnati market.

In addition, College staff members were interviewed as part of the live broadcast of the Lincoln Ware Show (on 101.5, The Buzz) on June 21. Cincinnati State speakers and their topics included:

  • President Monica Posey - CState's mission and impact in the community
  • Soni Hill, Senior Director of Student Success & Development - Support services for prospective students, current students, and graduates
  • Cheryl Brackman, WDC Director/Senior Business Manager - Short-term certificates and courses available through the Workforce Development Center
  • Regina Livers, Director of College Access Programs - TRiO services and other college access programs
  • Dr. Myshamil Walker, Transfer Center Coordinator - Transfer pathways and scholarships
  • Bryan Dell, College Admission Representative - Experiences as a CState graduate who continued his education to earn bachelor's and master's degrees
  • Debbie Poweleit, Director of Admissions & Career Center - The admission process and details about Admit Me Day

Cincinnati State sponsorship messages also are airing on local public radio station WVXU. These announcements focus on ease of transfer from Cincinnati State to four-year colleges and universities.

PHONE OUTREACH: At the end of June, Marketing and Admission collaborated in making phone calls to admitted students who need advising to register for classes. A call script was customized for each division, but all calls encouraged new students to schedule an appointment with their advisor.

The calls directly reached:

  • 1,365 Business Division students
  • 1,155 Center for Innovative Technologies students
  • 2,571 Health & Public Safety students
  • 625 Humanities & Sciences students

ATLC air conditioning is working again

The Faciltiies Department discovered this morning (July 8) that the ATLC Building lost power to both air conditioning chillers over the weekend, causing temperatures above 80 degrees throughout the building.

The chillers have been restarted and Facilities is working with our vendors Trane and TAC to cool the building as soon as possible.

The Facilities staff apologizes for the inconvenience.

Blackboard Collaborate info session on July 8

An information session about Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, a new online synchronous classroom and meeting environment, is available today, July 8, starting at 1 p.m. in Main Building Room 347 (Clifton Campus).

Beginning in Fall Semester 2019, Blackboard Collaborate will replace Adobe Connect as the College's tool for online synchronous classroom activities.

Additional information about migrating from Adobe Connect to Blackboard Collaborate is available to faculty members in the BUG Blackboard Users Group "course." Look for a new section on "New Bb Collaborate."

Happy Hour on July 10 supports Surge Cupboard

The College Community is invited to a Happy Hour FUN-draiser on Wednesday, July 10, to benefit the Surge Cupboard, Cincinnati State's Student Food Pantry.

The Happy Hour takes place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Summit Restaurant (ATLC 2nd floor).

A cash bar and a special signature beverage will be available, and host Jackie Norton will offer an array of complimentary happy hour treats prepared by our Midwest Culinary Institute colleagues.

The fun includes a raffle, and everyone who attends will receive a Surge Cupboard magnet (like the one above) with a list of most-needed items.

Inventory at the Food Pantry is low, and the Cupboard needs your help to meet student needs this summer and get ready for Fall, too. 

Please bring items to donate to the Cupboard, or cash donations, which will be used by the Cupboard volunteers to purchase needed items.

DMS students seek ultrasound scan volunteers

Students in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Cardiovascular (DMSC) program are learning to conduct ultrasound scans this semester.

To complete course requirements, the Sonography faculty and students appreciate help provided by volunteers from the College community at lab sessions scheduled for late July and August, on Wednesdays at 1, 2, or 3 p. m.

If you-- or a family member, neighbor, or friend-- would like to volunteer for an ultrasound scan, please contact DMS faculty member Jackie Turner (jacqueline.turner@cincinnatistate.edu) with your name, phone number, and the dates/times you can assist.

Volunteers are needed for these faculty-supervised exam sessions:

Wednesday, July 24 - Carotid Artery Exam and Cardiac Exam (60 min. exam, no prep required) - Eight volunteers needed for scans that start at 1, 2, or 3 p.m.

Wednesday, July 31 – Leg Vein Exam and Cardiac Exam (60 min. exam. no prep required) - Seven volunteers needed for scans that start at 1, 2, or 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 7 – Leg Vein Exam and Cardiac Exam (60 min. exam; no prep required) - Seven volunteers needed for scans that start at 1, 2, or 3 p.m.

All exams take place in the Health Professions Building on Clifton Campus.

Faculty volunteers may use this activity as part of service requirements.

Students: "Financial Literacy 101" workshop on July 10

All students are invited to "Financial Literacy 101" on Wednesday, July 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This workshop is hosted by TRIO Student Support Services, in Main Building Room 131-B on Clifton Campus.

Workshop facilitators from U.S. Bank will cover topics including:

  • Budgeting
  • Savings vs. Checking Accoounts
  • Preparing for the Unexpected
  • How to Control Impulse Spending
  • Connecting the Dots to Building Financial Wealth

Students: Transfer Center calendar for July visits is available

The Transfer Center has released the July calendar of visits from representatives of four-year colleges and universities.

Students who are thinking about transfer to a bachelor's degree program after graduating from CState are encouraged to meet with advisors from visiting schools to get more information about opportunities and requirements.

No appointment is needed; just stop by the Transfer Center in ATLC Room 221 on Clifton Campus, near Bakery Hill.

The Transfer Center is open this Summer on Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
