Thank you from the President and the Provost

We concluded our Higher Learning Commission accreditation visit this week.

Although we will not receive a report for several weeks, we thank the entire College community for your work in preparing for the visit, as well as for your robust and thoughtful participation in the various HLC focus sessions.

At the conclusion of their visit, the HLC Site Review Team remarked about Cincinnati State's strong collaborative spirit, our strong connections to the community, and our excellent cooperative education and experiential learning programs.  

And, most importantly, they noted how much our students love Cincinnati State.

We have more work to do, and we will continue the momentum forward. But let’s take this moment to be thankful to one another for our collective work on behalf of our students and our mission.

Forum on Guided Pathways is Apr. 30

On Tuesday, Apr. 30, Cincinnati State will host a regional Faculty Forum on Guided Pathways Implementation, sponsored by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges and the Success Center for Ohio Community Colleges.

The Forum takes place from 1:30-3:30 p.m., in the Conference Center on Clifton Campus, and is open to all College faculty and staff members.

The Forum facilitator is Dr. Rob Johnstone, Founder and President of the National Center for Inquiry and Improvement.

Dr. Johnstone served as a director, dean, and provost in the California community college system for more than a decade, and has worked with more than 350 colleges nationwide on projects and strategies to improve student learning and increase student completion, with "passion for improving lives and communities through a social justice and equity lens."

New Resource Guide for students is available

Starting Apr. 26, printed copies of a new Resource Guide for current students will be distributed to campus offices, so faculty and staff members can share the Guide with students.

An electronic version of the Guide will be created this summer, with "live links" to additional information for the resources listed in the Guide.

CET and EVT students placed in top five in ASCE events

Cincinnati State's Civil Engineering Technology (CET) and Environmental Engineering Technology (EVT) students placed in the top five in several events at the annual American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Ohio Valley Student Competitions.

Cincinnati State was the only community college in the competitions held Apr. 11-13 in Akron.

The CET and EVT students competed against 4-year engineering students from host school U. of Akron and other many universities including Ohio State, UC, UK, Pittsburg, Louisville, Carnegie Mellon, and more. 

The Environmental Team from Cincinnati State placed second overall.

Environmental events focused on developing a flow-through water treatment apparatus that removed phosphorus, alkalinity, and turbidity while maintaining neutral pH and proper flow. (See photos at right and below.)

In addition to producing a high quality effluent, the environmental team earned high scores for most creative treatment apparatus and for best environmental technical paper.

The Surveying Team placed 4th, missing third place by less than 2 points out of 800 possible points, and only 6 points behind the first place team. Other achievements included:

  • Cincinnati State's Concrete Canoe Team (photo above) placed 4th in the women's sprint race, 6th overall in races, and 7th overall for the presentation, technical paper, display, and canoe.
  • The Frisbee Team placed 5th and the technical paper placed 4th.
  • The Geotechnical Team placed 9th.
  • CState's Balsa Wood Bridge teams were among the 11 teams disqualified because of an obscure rule. Only six teams qualified for the event this year.

The teams also thank the College Maintenance Department, Senior Lab Technician Wayne Herbers, Dr. Tom Burns and Professor Jim Decker for their support and assistance.

Help make Commencement memorable for our grads

Faculty and staff volunteers (or your family members) are still needed to help with Cincinnati State's annual Commencement Ceremony, on Sunday, May 5, at Xavier University's Cintas Center. 

  • Volunteer duties start at 1:30 p.m., and include helping with the student line-up and procession, distributing programs, and other tasks.
     
  • Faculty and staff members who are participating in the procession can help earlier in the afternoon, and will be excused in time to line up for the procession, which starts about 3 p.m.
     
  • Family members of employees (including high-school age children) are welcome to assist in distributing programs to Commencement guests.

Celebrate after Commencement with colleagues

The Celebrating Community Committee invites all College employees to a "graduation party" on Sunday, May 5, at Taft's Brewporuium on Spring Grove Ave.

The celebration begins at 5 p.m. and continues till closing time. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

All employees are welcome to celebrate our students' success and "unwind" with friends-- even if you don't attend the Commencement ceremony (although we hope you will).

"Blackboad 101" training for new instructors will be offered:

The Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 29, through Friday, May 3. The Library will be closed on Saturday, May 4.

Library Summer Semester hours begin Monday, May 6:
