Beth Hamon receives "Great Ohio Nurse" recognition

Beth Hamon, Professor of Nursing (seen above during a mission trip to Honduras), was recognized as one of “100 Great Ohio Nurses” by the Ohio Nurses Association and the Ohio Nurses Foundation.

The list of "100 Great Ohio Nurses" for 2019 appeared in the April issue of the publication The Ohio Nurse.

Beth was nominated by a colleague who wrote, “Beth teaches safety and professionalism first, and the focus is always on critically thinking about what the patient NEEDS. She not only holds her student’s hands, she helps them to learn how to hold their patient's."

The nomination continued, "Beth has shared her knowledge and experience with multiple new faculty as they move from novice towards expert in their new field of teaching.”

Health and Public Safety Division Dean Janelle McCord said, “We are proud to have great faculty like Beth, who are passionate about sharing their expertise with their students and colleagues, and do so because it is who they are.”

Student poster sessions on Apr. 17 & 18 describe collaborative projects

Throughout Spring Semester, students enrolled in ESL 052 (English as a Second Language Level 2) and PSY 110 (Introduction to Psychology) collaborated on research projects that focused on social justice topics.

Members of the 12 student groups formed from the two classes will describe the results of their research, as well as their approaches to working together, in Poster Sessions on Wednesday, Apr. 17, and Thursday, Apr. 18.

  • The Poster Sessions times/locations are:
    • Apr. 17 - 11 a.m to noon, ATLC First Floor Lounge (near the fireplace)

    • Apr. 18 - 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m., ATLC "The Spot" (near the Bookstore)
  • All students and employees are welcome to view the project posters and discuss the projects with students from the two classes.

  • The posters will remain on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Apr. 17 and 18, in locations listed above for each day.

  • A sample poster is below (click the image to see a larger view of the poster contents).

Psychology professor Heather Hatchett, who co-facilitated the student projects with ESL instructor Maggie Oliveira, said each student group included PSY 110 and ESL 052 students.

As students worked together on their projects, they honed their research and language skills.

Heather said the poster display, called “We Are Cincinnati State,” should demonstrate overall that "unity and belonging can be forged out of the College’s rich diversity."

Heather said the idea for the collaborative approach to the courses emerged from the self-study reports prepared by the ESL department and the Social and Behavioral Sciences department.

Each element of the student projects was aligned with ESL 052 and PSY 110 course learning outcomes, including the project instructions and timeline, the written assignments, and the group activities and student partner meetings.

Helpers needed for May 5 Commencement

Faculty and staff volunteers are needed to help with Cincinnati State's annual Commencement Ceremony, on Sunday, May 5, at Xavier University's Cintas Center. The ceremony begins at 3 p.m.

  • Volunteer duties start at 1:30 p.m., and include helping with the student line-up and procession, distributing programs, and other tasks.

  • Faculty and staff members who are participating in the procession can help earlier in the afternoon, and will be excused in time to line up for the procession.

  • Family members of employees also are welcome to assist in distributing programs to Commencement guests.

Volunteer coordinator Linda Romero-Smith said, "Commencement is an exciting event for our graduates, and we hope College employees will join in to make the day special for graduates and their families."

"Our students love to share the day with Cincinnati State faculty, staff members, and administrators who have been part of their college experience," Linda added.

If you want to volunteer, or if you have questions, please contact Linda (linda.romero@cincinnatistate.edu).
