Strategic Planning needs your input
Development of a new Strategic Plan for the College is underway, starting with a survey for College employees, and Listening Sessions for stakeholders throughout the region.
A Listening Session for employees took place Nov. 9 as part of Convocation; however, the data-gathering process at Convocation was not able capture all of the ideas and comments offered.
Therefore, all College employees are encouraged to complete the online Strategic Planning survey.

Please complete the survey by Monday, Nov. 26.

These sessions begin Nov. 15 and continue through Nov. 29.
- Employees are welcome to attend the Stakeholder Listening Sessions or to forward information to students, co-op employers, and community organizations that have an interest in Cincinnati State.
- All attendees should reply at least two days before the session you plan to attend.
"FAFSA App Day" on Nov. 15
The Office of Financial Aid is sponsoring "FAFSA App Day" on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to help students file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form for 2019-20.
The event takes places in ATLC Rooms 101 and 102, near the new Financial Aid Office location in ATLC 105.
The new FAFSA App makes it possible for students to file the form using their phone.
However, students who wish to use desktop or laptop computers to complete forms also are welcome to stop by for assistance.
In addition, help will be provided completing the online application for Cincinnati State institutional scholarships.
Volunteers needed to serve Thanksgiving lunch
The College's annual Thanksgiving Lunch for students is Thursday, Nov. 15, and faculty and staff members are invited to serve as servers for the meal.
If you can assist for 30 minutes or more, between 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, please send a message to Lachanna Jackson (email@example.com).

Order Bakery Hill Pies & Rolls by Nov. 16
The chefs of Bakery Hill remind you that if you want to add Midwest Culinary Institute products to your Thanksgiving table, you must place your order by Friday, Nov. 16.

New Accuplacer test starts on Nov. 19
Cincinnati State will begin using the Accuplacer "Next Generation" placement test on Monday, Nov. 19.
According to CollegeBoard.org, the owners of the Accuplacer test, the Next Generation test uses redesigned reading, writing, and math content that "more effectively and more accurately helps institutions place students in classes that match their skill level, and includes texts and tasks encountered in first-year college courses."
Implementation of the Next Generation Accuplacer test at Cincinnati State, including new cut-off scores for math and English placement, was planned by the Placement Committee, chaired by faculty member David Hensley.
Other faculty members on the committee are Michael House, Jen Martin, Maggie Oliveira, Ryan Shadle, Stephanie Stafford, Alyce Thompson, and Andrea Trapp.
Staff/administration committee members are Uma Gowda, Kasey Hall, Jason Moore, Randy Sprague, and Geoffrey Woolf.

ECE Club seeks infant care donations for hurricane-affected families
The Cincinati State Early Childhood Education Club is seeking donations for their "Baby Shower" activity to assist with infant care for families affected by Hurricane Florence.
The hurricane caused extensive damage in the Carolinas in mid-September, and the Club has extended their deadline for donations to Tuesday, Nov. 20, because of increased demand for infant care supplies.
Needed items include:
- Baby wipes
- Unopened packages/boxes of diapers
- Solid baby food
- Unopened cans of baby formula
- Gently-used clothes for infants (sizes Newborn to 12 Months)
Bring your donations to Room 128 Main (Clifton Campus), the ECE Learning Lab / faculty offices.

Sonography students need Ultrasound Scan volunteers
Students in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program must practice conducting ultrasound scans this semester.
To complete course requirements, DMS faculty and students appreciate the help provided by volunteers from the College community.
If you-- or a family member, neighbor, or friend-- would like to volunteer for a 1-hour ultrasound scan, please contact DMS faculty member Jackie Turner (email@example.com) with your name, phone number, and the dates/times you can assist.
All exams take place in the Health Professions Building on Clifton Campus.
Faculty volunteers may use this activity as part of service requirements.

Horticulture grad featured in Washington Post article
Cincinnati State graduate Julie Flickner was featured (including a photo) in a recent Washington Post article about "high tech farmers" in Cincinnati who are using LED lighting to grow plants with renewable energy and much less water than conventional farming.
Professor Heather Augustine said Julie earned the Sustainable Horticulture associate's degree as well as the Sustainable Agriculture Management certificate.
"Julie is now a full-time farmer at 80 Acres Farms on Estes Avenue, the location featured in the newspaper story," Heather said.
"I took the Introduction to Urban Agriculture class to 80 Acres Farms recently, and Julie led the tour," Heather added. "The Sustainable Agriculture students were impressed to see where a degree from Cincinnati State can take you!"
CState "Young Chefs" win awards

Cincinnati State hosted the 11th annual Chaine des Rotisseurs Young Chef Competition on Nov. 4.
According to faculty member Chef Alan Neace, "It was a great day of cooking and camaraderie with our culinary students."
A total of 20 young chefs created specialty meals (two courses, four portions per course) from a "mystery basket" that included beef tenderloin, Norwegian salmon, and multiple supplementary ingredients.
Each competitor was required to write a menu and then prepare their meals in only 90 minutes.
Gold medal winner Michael Puma will represent Cincinnati at the regional competition in Indianapolis in April. Mark Mertes earned second place, and Malia Miller was third.
Guest judges included Marilyn Harris, Paul Parks, Mary Horn, Jean-Robert DeCavel and CState Culinary Program Chair Jeff Sheldon.
Chef Neace thanked Chef Sheldon and MCI Events Coordinator Sarah Gorman for their assistance carrying out the competition.
La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is the oldest and largest gastronomic organization in the world, with about 6,000 members in the US, in approximately 125 Bailliages (chapters). The Cincinnati chapter was established in 1981.
The organization strives for balanced membership representing professionals involved in food preparation, hotel/restaurant service, and related fields, as well as "knowledgeable laymen who enjoy the pleasures engendered by good cuisine, good wine, and good company."
